Spotting after Hysterectomy – What You Should Anticipate
You’ve probably heard of the term spotting for quite sometime now especially after having surgery. But to those who have not heard of such term, let me tell you what it means. Spotting is a slight vaginal bleeding often seen as a faint pink or dark red discharge. Spotting after hysterectomy is actually normal but not all the time.
The probable signs you can use for detecting abnormal bleeding are as follows:
1. Change in color – If you notice your discharge change from faint pink to bright red then expect to have a fresh bleeding inside your body.
2. Change in amount – Since healing should be the next step of surgery, a heavy bleeding implies something else and that is not recovery.
3. Sudden manifestation of pain – Pain is inevitable especially every after operation. However, continuous pain that is not resolved by medication could imply complications.
Additional information about the causes of bleeding will be explained here as well. Read on the following so that you will have an idea about the reasons behind the bleeding tendencies.
1. Trauma – It happens when the doctor’s order is not followed. It can be due to use of tampons or simply having sexual intercourse.
2. Improper Ligation – Suture may become loose so prompt detection must be done for early treatment.
3. Tissue Sloughing – The blood vessels and tissue remnants sloughs out of the system which is normal.
4. Anticoagulant Therapy – Medication such as aspirin can affect blood clot formation.
5. Other Diseases – Bleeding is not always caused by post-operative phase but to other conditions also.
The six weeks duration after hysterectomy is the normal period for spotting. After this span of time, it may be indicative of other conditions such as polyps, infection, fibroids or even cancer.
Spotting can be normal or abnormal. Hence, you should familiarize yourself with this information so that you know when to avoid complication and when to seek for help.
