Post Hysterectomy – Prepare and Take it Easy

A little preparation that includes finding out what to expect post hysterectomy can go a long way in facilitating a smooth recovery. Depending on the specific type of surgery, this operation will require a period of time spent in the hospital. With some techniques the length of stay has been reduced to as little as 24 hours, but with others the in facility re-cooperation time is longer.

When the surgery is performed to remove the uterus and cervix it is a total hysterectomy and when only the uterus is removed it is a subtotal or partial hysterectomy. A woman should expect and anticipate some of the challenges she will endure post hysterectomy.

It is a good idea to consult family and friends to set up a support team to assist you when returning home following the surgery. These individuals can help with daily tasks, such as preparing meals, running errands and helping around the house. A woman’s mobility will be greatly decreased initially. She will be unable to go up and down stairs. She will not be able to drive and even getting into a sitting position will probably require help from someone.

This is very important. A patient recovering from one of these procedures must avoid all lifting. This will be the responsibility of the support team. A mishap while lifting can cause damage and result in a trip back to the hospital.

Some women are uncomfortable being so inactive and dependent on others. The key is to learn to relax, and as much as possible enjoy the recovery period. Use the time to catch up on reading you seem to never have time for. Put on some of your favorite music or turn on the TV and allow yourself to be entertained.

Recovery time can span for a couple weeks to months depending on the specific case.
