Hysterectomy Surgery – A Treatment for Ovarian Cancer
Catching the disease in the early stages is the most important factor when treating any kind of cancer. If the disease is diagnosed early, there have been enough advances in treatment to give a patient a good chance of returning to a normal life with many forms of the condition.
The problem with ovarian cancer is that it often goes unnoticed until it has advanced to the latter stages. The causes of this particular cancer are most often unknown. It begins as a tumor in an ovary and spreads when malignant cells enter into the abdominal cavity. Once in the abdomen, the cells grow on the lining of the abdomen and also invade other organs. The lymph nodes, liver, lungs and other organs are at risk once the cancer reaches the advanced stages.
When indicators arrive, they are usually in the form of cramps and pain in the stomach or back, vaginal bleeding, bloating and nausea. Unfortunately, these symptoms usually do not present themselves until the disease has spread throughout the body. A laparotomy procedure may be performed to make a definite diagnosis and determine how far along the condition is.
The possible treatments will depend on at what stage the illness is identified. Chemotherapy and surgery are sometimes possible treatments. In some cases hysterectomy surgery is necessary to remove the malignant cells.
There are different types of hysterectomy, but in general it involves the removal of the uterus when problems such as endometriosis and fibroid tumors develop and cause pain and heavy bleeding. However, other organs that can be removed are the cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes, depending on the particular case.
Other forms of cancer, such as colon, breast, and stomach, sometimes spread to the ovaries. When this happens, hysterectomy surgery may again be a method of treatment.
